The first Night Beats LP sold reasonably strongly despite our never reviewing it so I’ve been curious as to what these guys sound like. As it turns out they’re a psychedelic pop trio with their head stuck right up the ‘60s. The first band that springs to mind when slipping this disc into the player are the 13th Floor Elevators but other Nuggetstastic types like the Electric Prunes also spring to mind...basically a revival of the wild Texan psychedelia in much the same way that contemporaries The See See painstakingly recreate the somewhat less gnarled ‘60s sounds from this side of the pond.

Thankfully they’re good at it and while it does get a bit ‘Austin Powers’ in places it doesn’t come across like pastiche, these are lovingly constructed songs which do a great job at recreating that warm, scrappy energy which has kept the Nuggets comps as such an essential part of every record collection for so long. At times when they start bringing fuzz and feedback into the equation there’s a certain Ty Segalliness to proceedings which will no doubt appeal to those of you who thought the Fuzz album was too short, but overall this is much more on a garage-pop tip than than that lot’s blown out racket, shades of the Black Angels and BRMC in places. If you’re into all this ‘60s-style garage-psych that’s so popular, this is worth a go.

Night Beats has a wonderful 1960's feel to it!! The songs are overcooked in reverb to give them a cool retro sound!!
