Those lovely people at Finders Keepers have a double portion of cult Czech cinema for you this week in the form of these soundtracks to 1969/72 films by “Czech New Wave Master of Macabre” Jujaj Herz. The first is 1972’s ‘Morgiana’, scored by Lubos Fiser who also did ‘Valerie and her Week of Wonders’. It’s quite a grandiose and often creepy soundtrack which veers cleverly between stirring orchestral strings and strange experimental atmospherics, percussive loops and quavering analogue synths, with echoes of Italian contemporaries alongside a Bernard Herrmann-esque tension.

Zdenek Liska’s ‘The Cremator’ soundtrack is “like the last music you hear before you’re sent off to be killed.” (Phil) “Yes it’s conveyor belt music, before the curtains close...” (Kim) “...and then you’re suddenly obliterated into nothingness.” (Phil). Yes, that’s how cheery our conversations get at Norman Towers II, but still I guess that’s pretty appropriate for the soundtrack to a film called ‘The Cremator’. “Oh I didn’t know it was called ‘The Cremator’!” says Kim. There’s a lot more choral stuff on here and it tends to be either straight-up chilling or upbeat in a really sinister and claustrophobic way.
