Remarkable.

I had absolutely no idea what the recent stuff from the Pet Shop Boys sounded like. My ears last clasped on them circa the utterly brilliant ‘Love etc’ single a few years back. Here they are with a brand new, limited edition 12” and CD with a track taken from their recent album (’Electric’) produced by Stuart Price (Madonna, Zoot Woman etc).

The title is very Pet Shop Boys isn’t it? The sort of thing that people in the media in London think is clever and subversive. The track is apparently based around Michael Nyman’s "Chasing Sheep Is Best Left To Shepherds" (you can almost see Guardian writers collapsing under the weight of their own adoration). What it does sound like is ‘Go West’ by the Pet Shop Boys. It's a bouncy little pop tune with one catchy refrain which goes round and round and round until you start accepting that this is just the way life sounds now. It has a wholly unexpected ‘happy hardcore’ style breakdown halfway through but otherwise its just an endless happy loop with Neil Tennant’s voice squashed on top referencing Tony Benn, tea and Karl Marx - thus further guaranteeing them national treasure status.

We also get mixes from The Penelopes, Claptone, Dave Aude and Little Boots (remember her?). Limited edition and all these 12”’s sell out dead quick like, so be swift if you want one.
