Ex-Emeralds synth guru Steve Hauschildt is, much like his erstwhile bandmates, a creatively restless type, as evidenced by this release here. Editions Mego have put together an archival collection of the best of his home recorded synth tinkerings from 2005-2012, all of which is previously unreleased (with the exception of a few tracks which previously appeared on very limited cassettes and CDRs).
I’m listening to the first disc, ‘2010-2012’, and there’s a whole variety of stuff on here, from weird wibbly sci-fi droneswells to more soundtracky, driving stuff in the John Carpenter/Zombi mould. Some songs are brief little sketches, others more fleshed out compositions, others lengthy hypnotic new age synth meditations and cosmic bliss-outs. What’s hitting me hardest in my position as reviewer is that we’ve got about two hours of music here and I’ve got about half an hour to say something about it. He has, as the press release states “reconfigured and reappropriated techniques from Berlin School, Drone, New Age & other forms of electronic music to create something wholly his own”, and this epic collection gives you some in-depth insight into the musical journey he’s taken over the last few years.
