7/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 05 September 2013
Al Cisneros is of course best known for his work as singer and vocalist in stoner rock legends Sleep and Om, but lately he’s been going it alone with some dubby post-industrial dark ambient type sounds. That’s very much what you’re getting on this 10”, with seven and a half minutes of spooky grooves on each side with droney synth, weird detached beats with lots of echo on them, and some understated bobbling bass.
The second track picks up where the first left off, fading in on the same slow and sensuous looped melody, shuffling up your third eye with an ominous determination. To be honest there’s part of me that spent the whole record waiting for the distortion to hit...it’s not that there’s anything wrong with it as such, it’s just that we know that mighty earth-swallowing riffs are where his strengths lie - not that he should just keep rehashing his old records but we’ve seen this kind of thing done more convincingly recently by the likes of Forest Swords and Horror Inc. It’s perfectly okay but I’m not blown away.
