Daniel Lopatin and Joel Ford’s Software Recording Co. score the debut full length from Huerco S. A chap who’s been making waves with his brand of lo-fi experimental house with releases on Opal Tapes and Future Times among others. I’m now on my fourth spin of “Colonial Patterns’ so it must be doing something right but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Mister S assembles and layers what appear to be simple loops, all dubbed out and stoned sounding and together they create a warm, inviting introspective mood with sad sounding house music and at times dub techno ('IiƄzhiid for example) as its pulse. It’s pretty raw, with crackly samples and more than likely intentionally crude joins here and there which add to the records charm. It feels worn, dusty and somehow familiar but retains a freshness lacking in the output of his new-age house contemporaries. The pace throughout is slow, and gloopy. Perhaps even disjointed and rugged, moving from almost dancefloor moments to more druggy hallucinogenic zones.

Thoroughly enjoyable gear on 2LP with download.

9/10 Chris Edwards Customer review, 2nd January 2014

Given this a fair few spins now and it "just keeps on getting better" as some dicks say. Think house, think techno, think grainy ambient. Give them a light whisk, add a pinch of 'feeling a bit fucked' leave to dry for 24 hours and then dip again and that's EXACTLY how this record sounds. Mega. One of the best things I heard in 2013.
