Strangely enough I actually saw White Manna just three or four nights ago at Leedsverpool Psychfest Leeds at the Brudenell on Sunday that had all the Psychfest bands playing. Anyway, I was pretty faded and it was about midnight and I totally tranced out to these guys, who play a fairly traditional and formulaic take on the stoner/space/desert rock genre but do it very well.
You probably have a pretty good idea what this means for you the listener. Slow, heavy grooves draped in ‘orrible dirty wah-fuzz guitar and unintelligibly echoed vocals, total desert rock. I’m particularly enjoying the closing track ‘Solar Returns’, which sounds all blown out and repeato like Hawkwind. There’s a warm repeating bassline which reminds me of MB from the ‘Worms or maybe Follakzoid and some big solar wind whooshes that remind me of the ‘Wind. It’s old-fashioned stoner rock fun, like White Hills and The Heads jamming together all-out. It’s not exactly breaking new ground but it’s a quality selection of mammoth weed riffs which I’d happily listen to again.
7/10 Rob Gannon Customer review, 4th October 2013
"Though it wallows in the indulgence of early 80s hard-rock, as well as the kitsch of its sci-fi, it’s also an album never afraid to roll out the righteous shred when required."
