- Lavandula by Takeshi Nishimoto

Sonic Pieces can be relied on to provide tasteful and accomplished offerings from all manner of modern minimal composition types, and this time it’s the turn of Japanese guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto, who on this CD plaintively plucks out a series of solo guitar pieces which vary from confidently picked neoclassical stylings to processed introspective ambient drones.
Nishimoto’s style is a graceful and minimal one, but with the sparsely scattered notes picked out with a surprising amount of confidence, attack and precision which lend an earthiness to the otherwise ethereal atmospheres, particularly effective in ‘Tone Water’ where he improvises playful shapes over a somnolent melodic throb - a pleasing meeting point of slow, restrained beauty and freewheeling musicality.
Elsewhere ‘Strassenlaterne’ delves further into his ambient side and the delicately upbeat ‘6/8’ introduces some puttering polyrhythmic percussion to aid his metronomic twinklings along to intoxicating effect. I’m actually quite surprised at how varied and imaginative this collection has been whilst still maintaining this confidently plucked and very tasteful aesthetic throughout. As you’ve come to expect with Sonic Pieces, it’s a very elegant album, and these initial book-bound limited runs always fly out so I’d get involved quick if you want one!
