6/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 10 October 2013
Ancient Times is the brainchild of Brighton youngster George Smale. They put out a tape last year on Coastal Wizards and now they’ve got this 7” out on Soft Power and I’m finally hearing what they sound like. What they sound like is Morrissey. Sorry George, but you’re going to have to get used to hearing that. Kim just came in from the stockroom to tell me that Ian’s “not coping very well with fake Morrissey”, whatever that’s supposed to mean.
On the other side we’ve got ‘Hieroglyphic’ which throws in some big gleaming Johnny Marr guitar jangle in the chorus to make it sound like, well, I don’t need to spell it out do I? It’s like a really well executed carbon copy of that admittedly superb band. Decent, well observed, but wearing its influence rather brazenly on its sleeve. Still, it’s early days yet for Smale and co and this single certainly shows promise; the songwriting and playing ability is there, they just need to find a way to inject a little more of their own personalities into their music.
