9/10 Mike Staff review, 28 August 2013
Hah, today is going well so far. First I got to review the superb new Dark Acid II compilation 12” on Clan Destine and now I’ve got the Etai Keshiki/Amorous Dialogues split to sink my ears into. That’s five songs of ferocious noise punk crammed onto a single 45rpm 7”, housed in a sealed colour printed envelope with a second fold-out riso printed sleeve and a 7x7 insert. Effort has gone in.
Not only that but these are two of the finest noise punk bands around at the moment. Those of you lamenting Divorce’s premature demise may well have heard Etai Keshiki before in various venues around the country and on tapes and CDs, but this is their first time on vinyl and they take no prisoners with their two tracks of sawblade guitars, heavy noise grooves and distorted, shrieking dual vocals, it’s a whirlwind of harsh but danceable noise the band have dubbed hypnowave. Fans of Arab on Radar, Gay Beast, Tropical Trash, Skin Graft records and that recent Guerilla Toss/Sediment Club LP should pay close attention.
There’s three songs from Amorous Dialogues on the other side, who lead with clanking bass and splintered guitar lines for a vicious and frantic take on the old school emo sound that reminds me of bands like Reversal of Man...fast and angry. One of the songs is slow and angry with a bit of a Drunk In Hell feel, oh but now it’s gone fast again. Vitriolic and abrasive stuff on both sides. You’ll like it all!
