- Audiovisual Designs by D'Arcangelo
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 27 September 2013
I’m going to be hard pressed to find a record I enjoy this week more than Machinedrum but this D’Arcangelo release is certainly following on the mood of dark melancholic electronica nicely. The album is split into two discs ‘Audiovisual Designs’ is a batch of slow paced vintage bleached out electronica that sits perfectly in with your Boards of Canada style nostalgic synthery. ‘Kreate’ in particular couldn’t sound more Boards of Canada if it had spent the last three years fiddling with a drum sound although it is certainly livelier with its beat work.
It's a lovely sounding record, full of the warmest synth sounds, all intricately pieced together by the kind of bods who, one assumes, know exactly what they are doing. The second disc ‘The Depot’ is a much colder and less tuneful set of tracks full of industrial clatter yet the synths and the type of bleepery that is more fitting of their background on Rephlex. Certainly vintage Autechre is brought to mind in the chewy, boggling beats yet the warm synths are always there somewhere providing a blanket for the chillier aspects of the music. ‘Audiovisual Designs’ is like being wrapped in a warm blanket in a beautiful suburban bungalow with the central heating on, ‘The Dept’ is like sleeping on a plank of wood in a draughty industrial warehouse.
