8/10 Clinton Staff review, 05 September 2013
As you may have read, saturday is Cassette Store Day (Minidisc Store Day is pencilled in for some time next year). There are plenty of exciting releases but one of the most bizarre is not a cassette store day title at all but this odd three-tape release by Michael Beckett (aka TM Schneider).
Apparently loosely based around Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music (yet sounding absolutely nothing like it), this is an 84 song crawl through the vagaries of loop-based dark atmospherics. Many tracks recall Wolfgang Voigt’s seminal Gas project but even more dark and claustrophobic. Fans of The Caretaker will also enjoy the grainy dark textures the album throws up. It’s almost a shame that it’s on such an unpalatable format...and that listeners may be misled by the fact that it’s based on the Harry Smith anthology, it’s folk music of a sort perhaps, though one chock full of murky drones.
