8/10 Mike Staff review, 19 September 2013
We’ve got a big pile of psychedelia in this week from Trouble In Mind, including this sophomore album of ‘60s/'70s-flavoured power-pop from The Wrong Words, taking Big Star/Replacements guitar pop into even more shamelessly catchy places which often bring to mind The Apples In Stereo crossed with Elvis Costello. The singer strains on his high notes in a way which really reminds me of Ted Leo too.
Some of the songs have lovely arrangements incorporating strings, woodwind, brass, keyboards, slide guitar and the like, but essentially what you’ve got here are a collection of energetic ‘60s garage pop songs from the perspective of a bunch of ‘90s kids. And I don’t mean that in a dismissive way, it’s really nice. Ambitious but still ramshackle enough to be credibly human.
