7/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 16 October 2013
Here’s the debut LP by Zoo Zero, a band I’ve not encountered before. They appear to be from London and here dish out eight tracks of quirky chiming indie-kraut with a good degree of style, particularly impressing on lengthy opener ‘Fraktion’ which settles into a sweet head nodding groove with minimal fuss. Later on however things do take a slight turn for the Britpoppy in ‘Show Me Your Flag’, and the rest of the album mixes cosmic psych rock ideas with crunchy ‘90s indie rock with varied results.
It’s a solid effort, mixing drones and extended repeato sections with big chiming melodies with a casual restraint and chugging through some tasty Built To Spill-esque indie, but the pace does seem a little flat by the end and a very polished production job leaves it somewhat sterile. Worth a listen, though; while it’s not without its flaws Zoo Zero are certainly a band with potential as long as they don’t stray too far down a polished-and-anonymous The National route.
