- All That I Hold Dear by Homeboy Sandman
8/10 Andrew 8th September 2014
Homeboy Sandman seems pretty prolific just now, yet the quality remains high. This mini LP produced by M.Slago brings 7 more tracks of the MC's distinctive raps, laid back, almost spoken word rather than delivered in that sometimes tiresome 'spitting' style that seems to favour aggression and volume over invention and interest. HS provides a refreshing style, abstract lyrics more concerned with word play and psychedelic rhymes than bravado. King Kong Got Nothing On Me kicks off the record nicely, making way for the soul sample flipping Musician. Relapse plays with a lovely loop of piano, a nice part sung refrain, a lovely head nodder. In A Daze has a bit more boom, a tougher rhythm maintaining a bit of musical variety. Sureshots features MED another Stones Throw mainstay and again makes the most of a tinkling keys line over a skipping beat, MED's slightly more mainstream and upbeat flow countering HS nicely, again offering a bit of variety to the record. Runts and Knock rounding things off. A great record, one I've found I keep coming back to. I don't buy as much hip hop as I used to, but Homeboy Sandman is one I'll keep buying.
