7/10 Ian Staff review, 22 August 2013
This is the debut on Own Records from Melodia, a duo consisting of Federico Durand and Tomoyoshi Date who decided to make music after touring their own solo projects together, the press release doesn’t really tell me much about this record so I’m letting the music speak for itself. ‘Saudades’ is a pleasant mix of field recordings and ambient twinkles, Opener ‘The Spirit Of Rain Arrives To The Forest’ begins with the soft tinkle of wind chimes and the distant sound of birdsong, then slowly drifts in the pluck of harmonics on acoustic guitar and one by one other instruments creep in like piano and bell chimes.
This seems to be the theme of the record, like musical building blocks, each track starts off in almost silence and then builds up very slowly by adding one instrument or field recording little by little, it’s an ambience that keeps you listening really carefully as to what’s coming next. An interesting array of instruments appear here, Guitar, ukelele, music box, magic bell, trumpet, pump organ, the list is eclectic and endless and makes for a magical musical experience.
