- Fjall by Jared Smith
7/10 Ian Staff review, 22 August 2013
The Own Records imprint have two releases out this week, ‘Saudades’ by Melodia and this third record by San Francisco lad Jared Smith. ‘Fjall’ (meaning “mountain” in Icelandic) is another beautiful minimalist ambient piece, available on limited white vinyl. Mostly dominated by the soft tapping or plucking of acoustic guitar (at least I think it’s guitar, it could be any stringed instrument!), occasional field recordings creep in like the sound of a flowing stream in ‘Tracing Curves Below’.
Previous releases have seen Smith recording the sound of a loose street tile or the gentle bubble of coffee brewing so he’s no stranger to exploring the beauty of the mundane. As with most music in this vein sometimes the silences are just as important as the music itself, especially with ‘Quiet, For A Time’ in which the tiny clicks and plucks are often reduced to a whispering silence, the instrumentation can be almost unrecognisable on ‘Fjall’ but that doesn’t matter, it’s the feeling you get from the overall sounds created.
