- Violet Stains Red / Absent And Erotic Lives by Dadamah
8/10 Mike Staff review, 21 August 2013
It’s taken us a long time to get our last order from Mississippi, an expensive and drawn out international postage ordeal. One of the things contained within was this 7” on Grouper’s own Yellow Electric imprint featuring two unreleased recordings from the early ‘90s by Dadamah. There’s two songs on here by the duo, one with the girl singing and one with the boy, which will very much excite those of you who remember their sleepy minimal mope-pop sound; a scratchy and stoical guitar-and-keyboards take on all that slow-fi sadcore that was doing the rounds at that time.
It’s hard to see how these songs stayed unreleased for so long since they’re both solid efforts. I’m particularly liking the one with the boy singing (‘Violet Stains Red’, I think), which showcases his rich and boomy baritone (sounds like he could’ve been an influence on Daughn Gibson’s solo stuff), then there’s a strummy instrumental interlude, and then an outro where the two voices are interwoven in a subtle and sleepy way which makes me wish they’d carried on a bit longer rather than fading out. Both strong songs anyway. You should buy this if you miss the ‘90s. The splattery coloured vinyl looks proper nice too.
