7/10 Phil Staff review, 12 September 2013

I never knew Jarboe was known as The Living Jarboe. You know near our old office there’s a massive pet shop called The Living World. It’s still called The Living World. In case you’re unaware of The Living Jarboe (known as TLJ for the rest of the review) then she was in Swans until they broke up in 1998. I remember seeing them at Reading in 1988 around the time of the 'Burning World' album and they were ace. I was standing in a queue to get a baked potato next to Debbie Googe from My Bloody Valentine (she didn’t know who/what I was...) and after 90 mins I got my potato and kicked off cos it had a hair in it. Still I didn’t have to pay any extra for the hair I suppose.

I digress... here’s a ton of Swans songs from Swans and World of Skin era reinterpreted by TLJ. Swans songs are reasonably bleak at best and TLJ’s voice is haunting. There’s a dark beauty to the songs and her voice is pleasing on the ear. The styles vary from All About Eve gentle folk stylings to more industrial sounding clanking. The songs sound quite different to the originals as you’d expect as there has been much tinkering. It kind of reminds of that Frank Black CD where he did a bunch of new versions of Pixies songs (which was actually really good). As is this but you will need to grab a hold of your inner goth for it to make sense.
