Hippies. Your enjoyment of this record will depend quite a lot on your tolerance for hippies. Looking at the sleeve I thought it was some kind of ‘60s reissue but no, this quartet of skinny-dipping, flower-wreathing Swedes actually recorded this album just last year. The back cover even has an old-style photo collage of them. “It’s new isn’t it? That’s what makes it all the more stressful,” says a colleague. It’s meticulously arranged Canterbury-esque folk-prog type stuff, very whimsical. They’re playing flutes and sitars in the forest and petting a dog and showing us their bums.
In the finer moments it’s kind of like Jethro Tull crossed with the Byrds crossed with the soundtrack to 'A Mighty Wind', blowing a sweeping hippie majesty in ‘Through My Kaleidoscope’ like if Of Montreal finally succumbed completely to their Summer of Love infatuation, and they can dip into some Belle and Sebastian-esque twee-pop in songs like ‘The Fortress of the Foreign Legion’, but over the course of an entire album it does become a little cloying for me. I can’t fault their authenticity though - it really does sound like it was made 50 years ago! There’s a lot of people playing on this record, they do it very well, but I’m somewhat failing to connect with it. If you like the more whimsical and light-hearted side of ‘60s folk-pop you’ll probably lap it up though. I just asked Phil what the most hippie record we have in the office is, in order to come up with recommendations, and he just said "That thing there with the bloody arses on." Thanks Phil.
