5/10 Ian Staff review, 13 September 2013
Latest and seventh full-length from epic post-rock/metal twins Niels and Torsten Kinsella aka God Is An Astronaut.
I'm usually not one to moan about the labels that the music press like to invent to make it easier for people to understand genres in music. The term 'post-rock' to me covers a wide area, from the likes of the more cyclical jazz based stuff like Tortoise and Tristeza to the epic guitar rock stuff like Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky. GIAA fall exactly into this second category: they're pretty good at what they do but this is just another carbon copy of Mogwai/EITS etc. albeit with a bit more of a rock edge.
Most tracks start with a flutter of reverbed guitar and then slowly build and build into a massive crescendo. They have even 'adopted' the vocoder vocal thing that Mogwai did about 10 years ago. I will admit I am a fan of the whole post-rock thing and have followed Mogwai since their early days, but I think even they would question the whole copyright infringement on this.
I’m sorry if I’ve offended any GIAA fans here but seriously, go out and buy Rock Action, it’s much better!
