Been quite enamoured of this guy for a while, although his albums seem to be a little on the scarce side so I sadly don't own anything by him.
However, this one is shaping up to be one of my favourite minimal albums of the modern age. Shaking off the old emo-house tag he and his own highly regarded Dial imprint once comically earned due to the graceful Autumnal melancholia of earlier releases, this beauty is inspired by cinema in all its forms and as such is a gliding, panoramic treat infused with genuine wonder and calming, discreet yet sumptuous liquid grooves.
Quality is the key here, 'Films & Windows' oozes total class from the lush ambient introduction onwards. Lawrence specialises in deep, warm and tactile production techniques that totally pull you right in to his world. He wants to be seriously involving the listener. These tunes have a serene majesty but undeniably funky strut about them, like the most emotionally engaging music from Detroit, these are all gloriously built cerebral odysseys that nudge most minimal house efforts into the boring dunce's corner.
Silky and hypnotic with absolutely no clutter. Strange, beguiling astral effects are dotted throughout. These mysterious uplifting pieces, forged in a space and time all of their own, could go on for hours and I'd be sat here contentedly grinning, quite locked in the special zone that few electronic albums these days can elevate my mind to!
What you have here is an indispensable journey from a man who needs to prove nothing but has casually upped the ante once more. On my third listen I have to concur this is one of those rare things. Perfection.
