It took me a while to figure out what speed this 12” played at. I don’t like to dance, see, so I like things sloooow. Turns out it actually plays at a danceable 45rpm and is some kind of mutant minimal future-techno of the kind our Ant likes, but the livelier side of it. It’s got slippery beats, boomy bass pulses and some gritty post-industrial touches keeping things bunker. Sometimes a scary slowed-down robotic voice thing chimes in. I think it’s a voice, it’s pretty processed and weird sounding.

This kind of thing is far from my area of expertise so I don’t want to go on about it for too long - I’ll just betray my naivete and dig myself into a pretending-to-know-what-I’m-talking-about hole - but the combination of black-as-the-night textures and danceable beats is very well executed here. If I found myself at some scary underground rave for some reason I might even try to dance to something like this. Much better than any of the records Sleeper made in the ‘90s.
