It’s a strange contrast going from reviewing the mind-bending new Oneohtrix Point Never offering to this thoroughly pleasant bit of twinkly Americana-pop by Dim Peaks. It’s all gently plucked guitars and tasteful shuffling arrangements strongly reminiscent of The Weakerthans, sometimes with a touch of Lou Reed or Lambchop in the expansive arrangements and weary vocals.
At their more upbeat moments like ‘Long Goodbye’ there’s a quirky Steve Malkmus and the Jicks sort of bounce which I like, and the song in question also boasts an admirably wibbly guitar tone...but then ‘Time of Joy’ which follows it dives headlong into ‘Berlin’-era Lou Reed misery. These song titles don’t fit all that well with the moods of the songs do they? All in all a well-arranged bit of Americana-flavoured sentimental indie.
