Big J Dee returns from the grave to deliver a second 12” of ultra reliable cuts on Pay Jay as part of J Dilla’s vocal album ‘The Diary’ campaign.
‘Anthems/Truck’ was not only deliciously deluxe it was also a worthy listen that sat on my deck for a week on pure repeat. Now we’re treated to ‘The Shining Pt 1&2’ a.k.a ‘Diamonds & Ice’ in the bootleg world. ‘Pt. 1’ comes in classic, alternate and instrumental versions. It’s a breezy, soulful affair that brings to mind his production work for De La as well as Dee’s old partner in beat crime Q-Tip. Definite bloc party/BBQ jam. Super chill. You’ll have no doubt heard ‘Diamond’ before but an official single, on clear vinyl with B+/Shepard Fairey art, is always a welcome bonus.
‘Pt. 2’ is altogether different beast. Coming straight from the ‘Ruff Draft’ sessions, ‘Ice’ sounds like nothing out there, unless you count Kool Keith’s weird-ass self productions. Short, spooky, minimal and topped with Dee rhymes, it’s a real oddball treat. The synth line is killer. Again, you get three mixes: classic, Madlib mix (the best) and instrumental with the 12” playing out with the beat that never was, an unfinished cut entitled ‘The D’ produced by none of than the mighty Madlib.
This is a jewel. The must-have jam.
