7/10 Mike Staff review, 12 September 2013
West coast backpack hip-poppers Why? continue their slow metamorphosis into They Might Be Giants this week with a whimsical EP based around the lives of their own fans, selecting people who bought records from their webstore and internet stalking them before composing tracks based on their lives.
It’s a sweet-slash-creepy move which has garnered mixed results, from the amusing and affectionate ‘Banana Mae’ and ‘Peta Godfrey’ to the more questionable pidgin English piss-take of ‘Dropjaw’ (apparently an accompaniment to a soundless monologue video the band received). One of these singles comes with a golden ticket which entitles the listener to have a Why? song written about them. Overall more of a curio than a masterpiece but charming enough to keep the die-hards happy and undeniably a cute concept.
