- Nature Noir by Crystal Stilts
9/10 Mike Staff review, 11 September 2013
I came into the office today to be greeted with the words “I want you to do 15 reviews today.” No pressure then. As I cast my eyes across the barren Wednesday review mountain I spotted this third full-length effort from Brooklyn’s Crystal Stilts, their first LP for Sacred Bones. I’ve always been firmly of the opinion that these chaps are quite good, and listening to this album isn’t changing my opinions.
They have a great knack of blending reverby psychedelia, wibbly tropical surf and post-punk into a brand of indie rock which reminds me of Deerhunter and their fellow Atlanteans Carnivores, with weary reverbed vocals and dreamlike arrangements. They’re on fine and ambitious form here too, varying from straightforward ‘60s garage rock blasts like ‘Future Folklore’ to tape echo-laden hypno-psych workouts like ‘Darken The Door’, while ‘Electrons Rising’ throws Link Wray vibrato into a vat of Byrdsian psych in an Intelligence-esque primitive pop experiment. Once again Crystal Stilts deliver a highly satisfying mixture of ‘60s psychedelia and ‘80s post-punk.
