8/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 30 August 2013
Sadly it’s one of those weeks where we only have four days to do five days’ work, and everything is turning up towards the end just to make things even more inconvenient for us. Good records, too, and it’s so hard to do them justice when you’ve only got half an hour to jot down some thoughts while you’re tweeting other people’s reviews at the same time. Working at Norman isn’t the walk in the park you’d expect it to be, you know.
Grumbling aside, though, this is one of those good records. It’s pretty much what you would expect if you’ve been following music over the past few years. Expo 70 is of course Justin Wright, who’s been making lengthy bong meditations with guitars and synthesisers for a long time now. He’s made a lot of them. This one is of course on Deep Distance, which is that GPS offshoot that keeps putting out ace limited kosmische offerings by the likes of Kosmonaut, Black Unicorn and even JD Emmanuel himself!
What can you expect, then? I’d have thought you’d have figured it out by now. Wright is in full cosmic mode here, drifting along on swelling synthetic black holes and sometimes twiddling around with deep space guitar bliss quietly in the background, but the focus here is on the synths and their gliding, pulsating mechanical peace vibes. It will sound best when you’re loaded up on a nice marijuana cigarette but even if you’re not it sounds nice. I know because I’m actually not high right now and I’m enjoying it perfectly fine.
