- Split by Expo '70 / Plankton Wat
8/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 10 September 2013
“What’s this cosmicness?”, says Phil. Well, Phil, it’s the new split LP from Expo 70 and Plankton Wat, known to their mums as Justin Wright and Dewey Mahood. The Expo ‘70 side which Phil just commented on is pretty baked, to be fair, with rumbling drones and bubbling synthetic bleeps and twitchy chirrups and hypnotic little guitar loops. It’s one of those records that’s so deeply hypnotic and slow that it’s very difficult to write about whilst listening because I always end up in a slack-jawed trance state.
The Plankton Wat side is of course a bit more guitar-centric, with smoky looped licks in a fuggy haze of weed-folk with occasional bits of searing cosmic rock twiddling and AC hum. Closer ‘Faded Postcards’ is like a super-chill instrumental take on Neil Young’s ‘Cortez the Killer’; cheeky but brilliantly atmospheric.
