Here's a reissue of an early Tietchens LP from '81, and it's not the challenge I had been anticipating but more a skewed synthetic weirdpop collection full of bloops and flops and wibbles, inviting melodies and kosmische luxuriance. Synths dart and bump and pulse in deftly euphonic passages which are subtly tempered by cleverly self-sabotaging touches of dischord and chaos.
That's not to say it's without its abrasive aspects, 'Moderne Arroganz' features a voice listing types of insurance echoed in a fierce robotic crunch, 'Sauberland' is a tense, twitchy bleepscape anchored by a fast-paced but primitive drum machine, the ticking-clock rhythm and slicing synth melodies of 'Sekundentanz' would make for a great horror soundtrack, and on several occasions he pairs cheekily upbeat melodies with jarringly discordant drones.
Even at its weirdest, though, this is dramatic and accessible music which is well served by a sense of playfulness and pace, some tracks being crafty little sketches and others more fleshed out compositions. By the time you reach the contemplative drone of the closing title track your head will be spinning with his oddball melodies and otherworldly tones.
