- White Poppy by White Poppy
8/10 Phil Staff review, 12 September 2013
Not Not Fun have slowed down their intensive release schedule to just a handful of records a year now which I think is a good thing on the whole as there’s just too many records released these days. It also means you can put more energy into individual releases which is undeniably a good thing.
White Poppy aka Crystal Dorval has had a handful of releases (mainly cassettes) out on Constellation Tatsu, Kingfisher Bluez and Not Not Fun and here’s her first vinyl release. It’s summery sounding ethereal indie pop with more fuzz than you can shake a fluffy stick at. ‘Wear me Away’ has a total timeless feel to it with the washed out vocals all reverbed up and echoey. The guitar riffs are fuzzy and repetitive. Essentially what I’m trying to say is this is shoegazey! It’s somewhere between the wholesome and experimental pop of A Sunny Day In Glasgow and and the weird psychedelic wacky vibes of Sun Araw. It’s as dreamy as you can get!
