8/10 Clinton Staff review, 30 August 2013
The new band from Bikini Kill/Le Tigre lady Kathleen Hanna (hopefully that’s shifted a few copies already) is a raucous age-defying affair and also features Bikini Kill alumni Kathi Wilcox. They certainly sound reinvigorated, veering wildly between sexy slithery '60s sleaze with ultra distorted vocals (‘Oh Come on’), belting B-52's-ish synth pop fun (‘Ha Ha Ha’) and slinky Northern Soul pop, songs which have the range to appeal to fans of both The Make Up and The Gossip.
It's certainly made for the party in mind with Hanna’s helium high vocals often co-barked by a growly man for added shout-a-long effect. LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy is involved here and there and despite the odd misstep (‘Cookie Road’ is a bit Electric Six) generally bursts along pretty effectively, ‘Lookout’ shows that they can bring a bit of melancholy into the proceedings.
