6/10 Clinton Staff review, 23 August 2013
Just one important letter away from ‘dirge’, this sounds like Toyah Wilcox. Always odd that she ended up marrying Robert Fripp. It just doesn’t make sense, like when Victoria Wood and The Great Soprendo got together.
What we have here is a take on very early ‘80s gothy pop, the sort of thing that was produced by tens of groups worshipping at the altar of Siouxsie and The Banshees, yet in 2013 what does it all mean? It’s a decent enough pastiche with Severin-like bass-lines, wandering whistly synth and disturbed lady vocals.
Although there are hints of Zola Jesus in the vocals, neither side really has a memorable enough tune or anything new enough going on at this stage to appeal to anyone other than retro new wave goth enthusiasts. Comes with not one but TWO paper inserts.
