My brother was possibly right after all. Back in the late ‘80s, after he got home from school and played with the dog, he’d stick on The Dead C ‘Helen Said This’ and tell me it was the greatest thing since Manic Miner. God knows how many years on, the powers that be amongst the Wire-reading fraternity cite The Dead C as prime movers amongst the underground noise movers and shakers.

Here we have a new album from the long running noise-ters, containing as you possibly may expect two long tracks that take up a side of the vinyl each. The first piece is dirge-like, a grinding improvised noise. Drums pound away whilst detuned guitars play heavy distorted drones. The second piece is a mellow evocation of amp buzz, drifty drums and those distinctive half-picked detuned guitars with a sleepy murmured vocal wandering on top.

The Wire have recently placed The Dead C on a front cover, claiming that “their influence on contemporary underground music is incalculable”. Yet despite the bands distinctive, uncompromising approach and pummelingly intense compositions, it’s hard to think of more than a handful of artists who could truly be said to have been influenced by them. Instead such intense work plays out more to a small but growing army of listeners who ‘get it’ and who will be pounding down our door for copies of this long awaited record.
