9/10 Mike Staff review, 22 August 2013

Those reliable psychedelicists at Trouble In Mind have sent us another treat this week in the form of some exotic flavours from Lima, Peru, by quartet Montibus Communitas, who work their way through four hypnotic jams over the course of this LP. The sonic rituals are carved from violin, acoustic and electric guitars, quena, pan flute and tambourine, as well as all four members playing cymbals, making a kind of South American variation on psych-folk which sometimes brings to mind In Zaire side-project Orfanado if Dirty Three violin-scraper Warren Ellis was invited to wig out with them in a little rainforest clearing by a waterfall.

In places, like the second half of ‘Inti Uku Pacha’, the playing builds to a feverish intensity but the soothing timbres of the instruments being used mean it never becomes too overpowering, more of a trance-inducing thing with layers of polyrhythms and calmly intuitive melodic shapes that are bringing to mind Can or early Woods side-project Shepherds, but the puttering organic polyrhythms and assuredness of delivery save it from the full-on jammy wilderness of your MV/EEs and Sunburned Hands of the Men. On the second side it seems to get progressively more droney and percussive but it’s deeply hypnotic throughout. I’ve enjoyed it a lot.
