- Nommos by Craig Leon
9/10 Phil Staff review, 15 August 2013
I checked a bit of this online a few weeks ago and it sounded so awesome that I decided to get a few in to see if you, the general public agree. One thing I didn’t realise about this release is that it originally came out on John Fahey’s Takoma label back in 1981. I thought Takoma was all about the 12 string guitar and US folk music! Obviously not!
Anyway Craig Leon was a producer back in the late 70’s 80’s and he recorded the likes of Suicide, Richard Hell, Blondie & The Ramones to name but a few. ‘Nommos’ was his debut release and considering this record is over 30 years old it sounds remarkably fresh. The album opens with ‘Ring With Three Concentric Circles’ which is a swirling electronic Kosmische-fest with some haunting synth melodying the whole thing up. ‘Donkeys bearing Cups’ which is the track I listened to online (you can check it out on the site) is a punchy new wave rhythmical percussive beast with its heart firmly placed in repetition. It’s very Krauty indeed (along the lines of the more electronic folks like Cluster & Kraftwerk) and it’s proper doing it for me.
There’s only 5 tracks on this album and they’re all ace. I’d never heard of this guy before but in this age of reissuing pretty much anything that hasn’t been heard by the masses before (as there’s not much newness happening) then this reissue is an extremely worthy one. One for all fans of electronic music! And there’s a quote from Henry Rollins on the sticker on the front of the record so if that doesn’t sway you then just go home or something.
