Here’s an LP from the people who brought you the Saharan Cellphones LPs. This time they’re just focusing on one guy, Pheno S Kani. The artwork is totally amazing, he’s standing in front of a load of photoshopped explosions, planes and helicopters coming down, the Eiffel Tower falling over...carnage! He’s on the back looking very cool in some shades and brightly coloured clothes on some steps on the back too.
On the record itself there’s eight tracks of Sahel hip-hop with autotuned vocals, simple drum machine loops and hypnotic African melodies. There’s some punchy bits in the first track which are boomingly loud compared to the rest of the track, inviting the listener to play it loud and face the consequences. I’m enjoying the more laid back numbers the most though I think. Closer ‘Souroulouklouk’ is a case in point, alternating between a hypnotic autotuned chorus and laid back head-nodding raps, locking into the groove and just riding it to the end, where it stops really abruptly. It’s not as aggressive as I’d hoped from the crazy sleeve but warm and laid back west African hip-hop for people who like autotune.
