Two things in by Deft this week: the one I’m writing about and the 'Blue Jasmine' 12" which Kim likes so much it’s going home with her. This one is full of bright modern electronica which is as vibrant and bold as the lilac-coloured vinyl it is housed in. Deft uses a lot of the same tricks as worryingly moustachioed Berlin beatmaker Machinedrum, in that he blends a lot of influences taken from the spectrum of danceable music and puts them into a blender, stirs thoroughly and comes out with something fairly innovative. Opener ‘Faded’ has dark sub bass, slithers of hip-hop and Fly-Lo style flanging synth. Deft’s rhythms are awesome, especially on ‘Heart’, with its complex driving rhythms. ‘Rising Sun’ is like some house tune playing in the back of a taxi while you are hiding in the boot.
The A Side is good, but there’s some real magic overleaf. ‘Faded’ glides along on a sea of propulsive percussion, aided and abetted by a big fat bass-line and a neat acidy lead synth. As it progresses, the percussion becomes more intense until the whole thing collapses in on itself. ‘Paris Falls’ is similarly spectacular with house-y, jittery synth, another booming bass and the widescreen late night vibes of all the best tech-house. An essential purchase. Gotta make time to hear the other one.
