8/10 Ant Staff review, 23 August 2013
Zeitgeber is a collaboration featuring Joachem Paap (Speedy J) and Lucy who runs the Stroboscopic Artefacts label. Lucy is an artist I've been increasingly taking an interest in recently and good old Speedy J has been making techno since the dawn of time but for some reason he slipped off my radar in recent years.
This is far from the straight up club orientated techno I was expecting from the duo although really I should have known better. Together they've created eight tracks of experimental and futuristic electronic music that doesn't really bear much resemblance to their output as individual artists.
I've played this album a few times now and I still struggle to grasp any sort of narrative which is what makes it particularly interesting as it’s far from wildly abstracted. The futuristic cover image looks like something from George Lucas flick THX 113 which sort of assists in the imagination of the future worlds these sounds create, conjuring images of white rooms and metallic surfaces. On one occasion I imagined I was on board that really cool spacecraft from classic kids movie Flight Of The Navigator but this is actually a pretty dark record so rather than hanging out with aliens and drinking slush puppies I'm their hostage, being subjected to their clinical trials.
