8/10 Benedict Keeler Customer review, 9th August 2013
Four Tet is continuously honing his style like some kind of aural sponge. Along with Dan Snaith (of Caribou fame) as Daphni, these two are breaking new ground in terms of genre but also in terms of their respective labels - Snaith's Jiaolong, and Hebden's Text imprint both benefit from acting as some sort of pillar of influence, as well as being in-touch with each release, with no-fuss distribution. It's certainly admirable.
This time we have some African-infused vocal stomper, with short stabs of jungle drums and a shrill whistle-hook. The track starts off pretty stripped-back, in keeping with Hebden's recent output, and there is some dossing about, but the vocals centre the track and focus all the parallel elements. The potent finale certainly gives some dirty 90's jungle love, and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it jazz piano quirk. If this is the direction Hebden is headed with his upcoming album, Beautiful Rewind, it could be his strongest material in years - in the past he has certainly surprised, but he's beginning to innovate.
