- Ivy (Vatican Shadow / Lakker Mixes) by These Hidden Hands

These Hidden Hands are Berlin’s Tommy Four Seven and One Million Mangos Studio engineer and producer Alain. This is their debut release and the first for new label Hidden Hundred. Being a fan of some of Tommy Four Seven's output, particularly his 'Primate' album, I was expecting straight up techno but that's not the case at all. 'Ivy' takes cues from the heyday of 90's IDM with some crunched up beats and soaring melancholy synth melody complete with a darkside D&B bassline.
Dominick Fernow makes an appearance as Vatican Shadow for a remix, maintaining the integrity of the original sound palette but inserting a heavier, more pounding kick and makes the lead synth fizz and dissolve, upping it's ethereal properties into a mix that is pure Vatican Shadow; heavy, slightly industrial flavoured but with gorgeous swirling melodies counterbalancing the gloom.
Lakker are an Irish duo that have been putting out some cracking IDM/ techno hybrid tracks recently on Blueprint, Candela Rising etc. Their mix shows off their itchy and complex beat skills then just before midway slows down like it's slowly draining down a plughole then kicks back in with some gritty synth action and plenty of spooked electronics until the lead synth reappears at the fore before slowly retreating.
Three solid tracks make this a fine package indeed. Clear vinyl edition of 300 copies.
