“Eyes closed, ears wide open, we are given freedom to dream the void.” So begins the press release to this new Stargazer’s Assistant offering on the ever bleak Utech Records, who’ve got a few releases for us this week. I picked this one up after having a go at the beautifully packaged new Burning Tree LP, which turned out to be full of piercing sax and drum skronk which was quickly making everyone in the office angry at me. Great start to the day.

Luckily for me this double 10” is a million miles from that punishing free splatter terrain, with this bunch offering a much calmer selection of shadowy but palatable melodic ambience. It’s quite cinematic but also often odd and unsettling, with sweeping synth melodies underlain by a steady and relentless bed of muffled electronics, stumbling industrial loops and distant twitches and flutters - in places it’s like there’s two distinct layers, inviting the listener to turn it up loud or miss out on all sorts of depths and details. It’s a very enjoyable album, treading a path through cinematic post-rock and dark ambient terrain without succumbing to cliche.
