- The Hunter by Marnie
8/10 Mike Staff review, 07 August 2013
Here’s a 7” from the latest synthpop hopeful Marnie on Soft Power Records. She’s from Ladytron so I’m told. It’s nice stuff this, ‘The Hunter’ is kind of like The xx paying tribute to Freddie Mercury’s ‘Living On My Own’ - restrained but hooky darkpop with silky vocals and metronomic drum machines alongside epic synth drift and a few deft ‘80s power guitar touches.
Over on the other side the formula remains similar, but there’s more live instrumentation (bass guitar and tambourine) and some droney synths and it’s kind of like a breathier Niki & the Dove or something. Reference to a more understated Ladytron is obvious but valid. These are nice little morsels of minimal pop, I’m quite curious to hear her album now.
