I wonder if Hessien have named this EP after the fire in ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’...I hope so, I do like that film, but I suppose it doesn’t really matter. What’s happening on this record is that Tim Diagram (Maps & Diagrams, Atlantis, etc) has teamed up with Charles Sage (y0t0, The Rothko Chapel) to make four churning dronescapes full of rumbling, flickering electronics and crumbling, drawn-out twangs and hums from guitar, bass and ukulele. It says it was recorded and mixed in Australia and the UK so I’m assuming it’s the result of a bit of file-swapping to-and-fro between the two gents.
After a relatively serene droning opening number, ‘When The Planets Align’ forces itself more to the forefront of your senses with some intense rumbling and twitching alongside slow and ominous guitar touches, and then ‘From Beyond The Fourth Wall’ comes in, my personal favourite on first listen, with a hypnotic echoed guitar phrase accompanied by shimmering drone melodies, and very subtly underneath everything a boomy bassline cycles away and I think I’m hearing the splash and bustle of field recording but it’s too low in the mix to tell what’s happening. Then there’s just ‘There Are No Coincidences’ to round us off with some more watery sounds alongside feverish layers of static and drone. You always know you’re getting quality with these Sound In Silence CDs.
