Following her breakthrough release 'Ἀποκάλυψις', Californian songwriter Chelsea Wolfe released this fan-favourite. 'Pain Is Beauty' weaves sombre goth rock and ghostly darkwave into Wolfe's unique take on the singer-songwriter format gorgeously. Chelsea has become a beloved musician in both the metal and folk communities, and with albums as strong as this one it's easy to see why.

- Pain is Beauty by Chelsea Wolfe
Oh my pile! My Pile! Who to choose first, I can barely contain my excitement. Lets try Chelsea Wolfe. She is a lady who looks, from the sleeve, like the brunette ‘Papa Don’t Preach’-era Madonna in a hall of mirrors. She came to my attention via her bleak EP of Rudimentary Peni covers. This is less bleak.
She ain’t no way bubblegum pop yet but this has a relatively lighter touch full of icy european synths, dreamy gothy vocals and churning drum machines and yes musically (and dear reader I am sick and tired of saying this), it’s another ZJS2S. That’s Zola Jesus ‘Stridulum 2’ soundalike. It ain’t breaking any barriers, my socks are still on my feet but it’s a stirring dark lady goth feast for anyone with an ear cocked toward Grimes, PJ Harvey, Austra and the ever-mentioned Zola Jesus.
