This band is Champs, not to be confused with The Fucking Champs. Just Champs. They’re a duo playing vocal-led slickly produced folk-pop like a well-polished mixture of Tunng-ish textures and Mumford & Sons-esque shamefully harmonised choruses. They’re pictured on the cover looking wistfully into the middle-distance like Marks & Spencer-clad 20-somethings reminiscing about those suede shoes they wish they hadn’t ruined at Glastonbury. You’ll never understand their sadness, man.

It’s reminding me of The Waterboys (if I’m being generous) or maybe that band you see in the middle of the afternoon at festivals and think “this isn’t as bad as it could be” about before promptly forgetting. On the flip they demonstrate an affection for Simon & Garfunkel. Polished to within an inch of its life and competently delivered but where’s the substance? Where’s the ideas? Where’s the soul? Seems like music for (and by?) middle-class hippies. Listen to The Fucking Champs instead.
