6/10 Clinton Staff review, 23 August 2013
Produced by Dan Auerbach, the sleeve screams out. The Black Keys one also gets a writing credit on the A side. I thought it was fading out but I’d touched the knob with my knee. I wouldn’t have minded if it had, this is the type of bluesy rock sludge that doesn’t really enter my listening wavelength. But, as proved by The Black Keys winning a Grammy, music that hasn’t progressed past a Led Zeppelin outtake circa 1975 has enormous appeal.
Strangely, just as I’m about to write it off completely, it turns out I quite like the B side. Well, comparatively. It’s somewhere between Thin Lizzy and Lieutenant Pigeon (is there a band in the history of the universe more preposterous than Lieutenant Pigeon?) in its ‘70s glammy stomp. The chorus is just ridiculous. With the in-vogue producer on board this will appeal to many people but just not me, nor anyone I know.
