What the fuck does Helen Marnie look like on the sleeve to this, her debut solo album? Helen, as you may perhaps know, was in Ladytron who sometimes did some good songs, sometimes didn’t but people liked them it seems. Anyway she is wearing a sort of all in one faux leather body suit with sharp heels and what looks like a pinny. She’s obviously had enough of Ladytron being sort of underground electronic pop stars and gone for the real thing.
It’s so commercial at times it should wear a red nose, comprising of glistening, pristine pop, the fact that it’s produced by Daniel Hunt also of Ladytron suggests it shares plenty of DNA with her parent band. She has a strange Irish sounding lilt to her voice, not unlike Andrea Corr or the other one of The Corrs. Did anyone hear Andrea’s covers album? Although she ruined songs by The Blue Nile and Daniel Johnston among others...they were good choices. Anyway imagine if Andrea decided to go electronic pop disco, enlist the help of someone Swedish and end up with something like Eighth Wonder produced by Benny Andersson.
It’s perfectly accomplished, all with big fat choruses. ‘Violet Affair’ has a ‘60s sounding melody - weirdly reminds me of some Zombies tune or other if performed by Broadcast. It’s all perfectly enjoyable if you like your big stadium sounding polished electronic disco thing. I’m not sure who other than Ladytron fans it will appeal to. She won’t be competing with Kylie, or the Pet Shop Boys I doubt. Who cares though? She may have just done it all for her own entertainment.
10/10 Jim Customer review, 2nd September 2013
Marnie's debut is one of the best albums released this year. I think that even non-Ladytron fans could enjoy listening to Crystal World. Highlights: The Hunter, We Are the Sea, The Wind Breezes On, High Road, Submariner, Gold.
