8/10 Ian Staff review, 20 September 2013
Justin Broadrick has been busy playing with the newly reformed Godflesh but has found time in his schedule to bring us this latest record for his Jesu project, mixed by James Plotkin and recorded in his own Avalanche studios this is a much lighter affair than his usual crushing industrial sound, ethereal and drifting are the sounds created here, with just a touch of distorted guitar and Justin’s trademark moaning vocal style. It’s kind of like industrial shoegaze, slow plodding drum machine rhythms mixed with warped electronica and treated guitar and bass.
‘Comforter’ is a dreamy Mogwai-esque number and the epic 17-minute ‘The Great Leveller’ is a dirge of crunching guitars and vocodered vocals. I remember this project dividing a lot of Godflesh fans back in the day but I’d like to think that those fans have matured their taste a bit more these days because this is a superb record of post-rock/industrial soundscapes that put J. Broadrick up there with the great modern composers of today.
