- Black Beauty by Love
Having walked around for the past week with ‘You Set The Scene’ seemingly jammed on my iPod, I seem to have forgotten how much I like Love...until ‘Forever Changes’, then there’s barely a note that lived up to the quality of those early records.
‘Black Beauty’ is that rarest of things - a full length, never heard before album by one of the ‘60s’ most revered groups. It’s jolly expensive so to prevent me ruining a copy we are reviewing from samples we found in the darkest recesses of the internet. The album sounds of sufficient quality to beg the question why on earth didn’t it come out in 1973? It does however showcase the harder edge of Arthur Lee’s work, frequently comparable to Hendrix.
The press release boasts that it contains gorgeous melodies and stellar songwriting but it’s hard to pick much out as it generally seems to be full of searing guitar licks combined with a tough R&B swagger. It’s such a shame that Arthur Lee’s pretty music all but disappeared once ‘Forever Changes’ was cut but regardless of personal preferences this will be an important release. It showcases a rough and ready side of the band; Lee sounds angry and invigorated throughout with powerhouse performances from the band. I write all this, of course, with the caveat of having not heard the ‘proper’ thing. Comes on 180 gram vinyl with 28 page book.
